This Black Velvet Cake is rich, intensely chocolatey, and incredibly moist, with deep dark color and a silky chocolate glaze. Made with Dutch-process cocoa and a touch of black cocoa, this show-stopping cake is perfect for birthdays, holidays, celebrations, or anytime you want an unforgettable chocolate dessert.

⭐ Why You'll Love This Black Velvet Cake

  • Deep, dramatic black chocolate color

  • Rich and moist without being overly sweet

  • Intense chocolate flavor

  • Smooth, glossy chocolate ganache topping

  • Beautiful enough for special occasions

  • Easy to make with simple ingredients

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar

  • ½ cup unsweetened black cocoa powder

  • ¼ cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder

  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 cup hot coffee or hot water

For the Chocolate Ganache

  • 8 oz semisweet or dark chocolate, finely chopped

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Garnishing

  • Chocolate sandwich cookies, optional

  • Chocolate shavings, optional

Instructions

1. Prepare the oven and pans
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.

2. Mix the dry ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, black cocoa powder, Dutch-process cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

3. Add the wet ingredients
Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until the batter is smooth and well combined.

4. Add the hot coffee
Slowly pour in the hot coffee while mixing on low speed. The batter will become quite thin—this is normal and helps create an incredibly moist cake.

5. Bake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 28–34 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Make the Chocolate Ganache

6. Heat the cream
Place the heavy cream in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until it is hot and just beginning to simmer. Do not boil.

7. Melt the chocolate
Place the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 2–3 minutes.

Add the butter and vanilla, then gently whisk until completely smooth and glossy.

Allow the ganache to cool until it thickens to a spreadable consistency.

Assemble the Cake

8. Layer the cake
Place one completely cooled cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of chocolate ganache over the top.

Place the second cake layer on top.

9. Frost the cake
Spread the remaining ganache over the top and sides of the cake. For the dramatic look in the photo, allow some of the glossy ganache to drip naturally down the sides.

10. Garnish and serve
Top with chocolate sandwich cookies or chocolate shavings if desired. Let the cake sit for about 20–30 minutes before slicing so the ganache can set slightly.

Tips for the Best Black Velvet Cake

  • Use black cocoa: This gives the cake its signature deep, almost-black color and an Oreo-like chocolate flavor.

  • Don't skip the hot coffee: Coffee intensifies the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee.

  • Don't overmix: Mix just until the ingredients are incorporated for a tender cake.

  • Cool completely before frosting: Warm cake will cause the ganache to melt and slide.

  • For an even darker cake: Use high-quality black cocoa powder and Dutch-process cocoa.

How to Store

Store the finished cake covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. If refrigerated, allow it to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving for the best texture.
